The Bad Guys would have Finished Nigeria if Jonathan had won – Prof. Soyinka
Respect Nobel Laureate, Prof. Wole Soyinka, has declared that he does
not regret his support for President Muhammadu Buhari during the 2015
general elections, adding that Nigeria would not have survived four more
years of former President Goodluck Jonathan’s rule.
Soyinka added that the revelation of stolen loot such as the arms purchase fraud justified his position that in the era of Jonathan, Nigeria was being run aground.
In his words: “We were left with two credible contestants in terms of catchment area for the nation. We had reached, in my view, the bottom. I became convinced that if this country underwent 4 more years under President Jonathan, the country would run aground completely. I looked at the record and said this cannot go on, this has to stop."
He confessed that he used to have a bad impression of Buhari who he once described as a “devil for whom in my calculation, no spoon existed long enough to justify the risk even of an impromptu snack.”
However, Soyinka said many of his trusted companions were able to convince him during the elections that Buhari had changed and that the highhandedness that characterised his military rule in the 1980s could not be repeated during a democratic rule.
He said, “Then I looked at this man who had contested elections three times before and said he would not contest anymore and then decided to throw his hat in the ring. I talked to people and I said do you know what you’re doing?
“And after weighing all the options, I said let’s try a new one. And since in electoral terms, he was the one, I guardedly, with reservations, announced that no, not a continuation under Jonathan.
“And so very reluctantly, I want this on record, because I made it quite clear, I weighed the two of them and I said this nation stands a better chance under Buhari. And what has been coming out now? Look at all that has been coming out? Look at the figures (loot) which virtually hammer one into the ground just the sheer enormity of the robbery of this nation that is getting exposed progressively. It shows that we did not make a bad choice.”
When asked if he was completely satisfied with Buhari’s six months in office, Soyinka said, “Not totally but Buhari has proven that there is such a thing as a born again democrat.”
Lagos Big Boy Killed by Conductor A Week to his Travel to US
After obtaining all travel documents, the 38yrs old big boy went clubbing with his friends on Saturday. He was returning when he had a disagreement with a bus conductor over the N50 fare and was stabbed to death.
His girlfriend, Temiloluwa Ogundayo, said he recently informed her to prepare for their engagement.
According to Punch, a police source said angry residents almost lynched the conductor, who was identified as Samson Eletu. He was saved by a community leader, who took him to the Aguda Police station.
The source said, "The victim was returning home after a party when he entered the bus. He gave the conductor N500, but the conductor told him he didn’t have N450 change, because the fare was N50.
“When they got to the bus stop, the man demanded his change and that started a fight. An Alfa in the bus intervened and separated them.
But the conductor, who was still aggrieved, trailed the victim to his house.”
It was learnt that Eletu, while armed with a broken bottle, banged on the gate into the house.
“As the deceased opened the gate, Eletu stabbed him. Babatunde took to his heels, but the conductor chased him. Unfortunately, he fell down and the conductor stabbed him repeatedly,” he added.
It was learnt that Eletu was fleeing from the scene when he was nabbed by a suspicious resident who saw blood stains on his clothes.
The younger sister of the victim, Blessing Omoyeni, said his brother would not have died if he was rescued on time. She said he spent over one hour in a pool of blood before he was rushed to the Lagos University Teaching Hospital, Idi Araba.
She said, “Nobody was ready to assist him to the hospital. A man had to throw himself in front of a commercial bus and asked the passengers to disembark, before he could get help.
“He was rushed to LUTH, but they were turned back at the gate by a doctor who pronounced him dead on arrival around 12am. People started beating the conductor and almost killed him before he was rescued and taken to the Aguda Police Division.”
It was learnt that the victim’s corpse was deposited at the Isolo General Hospital mortuary.
His girlfriend, who lived with Babatunde, said she was not aware that he had been killed until the early hours of Sunday.
“We have dated for over one year and he told me to meet my sister to ask for the requirement for our engagement. He said we would go there on Monday.
“On that Saturday morning before he went to work, we made love. He called me around 5pm to prepare food for him that he would soon be home. I had done everything and was waiting for him in the house till 11pm when I drifted off into sleep.
“Around 1am, he came in and slept beside me. He rubbed my head with his hand and I asked him if he had eaten his food, but he said I should not bother, that he was fine.
“I went back to sleep and it was around 6am that somebody called me and asked if I knew he was dead. I jumped up and looked around the bathroom and kitchen to know if he was there, but I couldn’t find him.”
The victim’s friend, Ogunyemi Olaribigbe, described him as quiet and gentle, adding that his death was a big blow to all who knew him.

“I collected money from seven of them, but he refused to pay and said he knew me on the street.
“It was at the bus stop that he broke a bottle and stabbed me in the forehead and cheek. I also got the same bottle, but unfortunately I stabbed him in the neck and he died.”
Soyinka calls for caution on Biafran agitation
"I wrote an article during the war that Biafra cannot be defeated. People misunderstood what I was saying. Once an idea has taken hold, you cannot destroy that idea. You may destroy the people, the carriers of that idea on the battle field but ultimately it’s not the end of the story.
Let’s not take this position of ‘don’t even talk about it’, ‘under my watch this will never happen’, don’t say things like that. Go into that environment and ask ‘what is it that we can do to make you happy and feel part of this entity?’ Listen to some other Biafrans and ask them why they want to stay (and say) ‘this is what we are ready to push as the overall authority in this area’. Don’t go around saying ‘the sovereignty of the country is indivisible, it’s non-negotiable’ all that kind of language will only make matters worse,” he said.

FG to re-introduce Toll at Federal roads- Fashola
“Maintenance would be our watchword. We are setting up a robust maintenance regime to keep our highways in good shape. This shows that tolling is necessary to support government funding. So, it will not be too much if we ask every road user to pay little to augment government funding for road maintence. It is eminent commonsense for us to find that money. We will use technology; so if we don’t pay cash, you will pay by tokens or tickets and the money is accountable and it will go to the right place. We will manage that fund properly and we will hold those who we put there to account.” he said

Fashola addresses the press, reveals his plans to revitalize Power, Housing and Roads projects
According to him, 200 road contracts were stopped and revitalizing them would bring 20,000 jobs. Regarding power, Fashola said efforts are on to improve on National output. He said the Ministry of Petroleum is constructing new pipes to transport gas to power generation company. This construction could be concluded in 15 months and would potentially add 2,000 megawatts to the current power situation. Fashola added that government would support local manufacturing of meters as an opportunity for entrepreneurship.
“We have more power generation than is been transmitted. The Transmission Company of Nigeria says it has 142 transmission projects on-going; 45 of them at 50% completion, 22 of them can be completed within a year. This will improve power. We need to reconfigure our roots for us to be able to install solar panels.”he saidOn government plans to construct 40 blocks of 12 flats per block, in each state of the federation, Fashola said“this will give 480 flats per states. States will however, have to provide 5 to 10 hectares of land for the project. Government priority is on refinancing the outstanding 200 road contracts before we bring in new contracts".
On climate he said:
“Nigeria made pledges at the climate change conference COP 21 and we pledge to fulfil these agreements. However, it will be in accordance with national priorities. Government is standing down slowly but surely to allow the economics of supply and demand to take place.”
