The guber candidate of the APC in Bayelsa State, Timipre Sylva, took his
campaign to Sagbama, home town of the state's incumbent governor and
candidate of the PDP, Seriake Dickson. Leadership's Osa Okhomina writes
on the import of the campaign and the response therefrom.
Sylva's campaign team led by Minister of State for Agriculture, Senator Heineken Lokpobiri, last Monday, stormed Sagbama in grand style. The campaign in Sagbama afforded Sylva the opportunity to talk of his plans to return the state to the era of opulence and prosperity if elected into office.
By this time, the messages of hope and prosperity, delivered by the APC and Sylva had spread like wild fire attracting more decampees from the PDP...
Those who left PDP and joined APC included over eight aides of the
governor and the State Commissioner for Lands and Survey, Furuebi
Akene. The flag bearers of 10 political parties in the state led by the
APGA’s flag bearer, Chief Christopher Enai, also declare their support
for Sylva.
OluFamous.Com learnt that Bayelsa elders who had endorsed Governor Dickson are now with Sylva.
However, at the campaign in Sagbama, the National Chairman of the APC, Chief John Odigie-Oyegun who affirmed the sincerity in the promises made to the people of the state by the party’s flag bearer, took a swipe at the state governor, over the poor performance in office in the last four years, describing him as a pretender in the area of good governance.
Oyegun said the last four years of the Governor Dickson administration in the State has been characterized by poverty and under development.
“The party does not need to work on the people of the State and convince them to vote for the APC. The people know that the last development efforts witnessed in the state was carried out by the Chief Timipre Sylva administration. And I was told that there somebody in the State Government House pretending to be the Governor” he said.
Receiving three of Dickson aides and two ex-officio of the State Executive Committee of the PDP, the APC national chairman assured that a vote for Sylva and the APC will bring prosperity to Bayelsa.
In his speech, Minister Heineken Lokpobiri said the issues ahead of the governorship election are beyond television coverage and frivolous claims. He said “we are here in Bayelsa for serious business. APC means business. APC has covered the whole of the State.”
The minister disclosed that a recent survey conducted by the APC in Bayelsa showed that the party will score over 75 per cent of the votes to be caste during the governorship election. He added that “the PDP go to television and portray themselves as if they will score 10 per cent of the expected votes. They brought hunger and poverty into the State but the APC has brought jollification.”
On his part, Sylva, after receiving the party’s flag, called for a minute silence for the late former Governor Diepreye Alamieyeseigha and late APC stalwart and former PDP Chairman, Col. Sam Inokoba (retd). He likened the APC train to the Biblical Noah’s Ark saying persons who failed to enter the ark would be swallowed by the Opuabadi (sea).
He promised that when voted in, his administration would bring prosperity to the state and end the era of poverty and hardship, “A new day is dawning over Bayelsa. We are going to bring prosperity and empowerment to you people especially the youths. It is our responsibility to look after the youths”.
By Wednesday, the campaign train moved to Ekeremor which ironically is the home Governor Dickson's wife and the DG of Dickson campaign and member of the House of Reps, Hon. Fred Agbedi.
Sylva’s acceptance in Ekeremor was total... A PDP chieftain, Kenneth Samuel, who led over 1000 defectors to APC complained that they were treated like slaves in their former party, noting “the APC has brought freedom to us. We are now free. We have come to vote and support the APC and Sylva”.

Sylva said despite his administration inheriting a sum of N101bn debt from the Goodluck Jonathan as the then governor of Bayelsa in 2007, his administration left behind sound financial status for the state.
