Clinton breaks Keystone silence, says she opposes pipeline

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Hillary Rodham Clinton said Tuesday she opposes construction of the Keystone XL pipeline, breaking her longstanding silence over a project criticized by environmentalists as a threat to the planet's climate.
That distraction, she said, is "unfortunately, from my perspective, one that interferes with our ability to move forward to deal with the other issues. Therefore I oppose it."The Democratic presidential candidate said she decided to speak out after concluding the ongoing debate over whether the pipeline should be built had become a distraction to larger efforts to fight climate change.
Clinton's announcement came as she has ceded ground in some polls to Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders, who has long opposed the project. It also followed the appearance of protesters at some of her recent campaign events holding signs that read, "I'm Ready for Hillary to say no KXL."
The former secretary of state had previously said she shouldn't take a position on the issue, because she didn't want to interfere with the Obama administration as it considers whether to allow construction of a pipeline that would transport oil from Canada's tar sands to refineries on the Gulf of Mexico.
The announcement was viewed with disappointment in Canada, where Prime Minister Stephen Harper has said as recently as last month that he was confident the next U.S. president would approve the project.
"This is not a debate between Canada and the U.S.," said Stephen Lecce, a spokesman for Harper. "We know the American people support the project. We will not engage in presidential primary debates."
Less reluctant was Republican presidential candidate Jeb Bush, who said on Twitter that Clinton's decision proves she "favors environmental extremists over U.S. jobs."
Spurred on by environmental activists and liberals who play a key role in the Democratic primaries and vigorously oppose the pipeline project, Clinton had expressed impatience in recent weeks over the Obama administration's drawn-out deliberations.
Her campaign said the White House was briefed on Clinton's position prior to her comments and she privately made her opposition to the pipeline known when she discussed her plans with labor officials in recent weeks.
Clinton is scheduled to raise money in California over three days beginning Sunday and was sure to face questions from donors on why she had yet to stake out a position.
Tom Steyer, a leading environmentalist and top Democratic donor, said it was a "clear example of people power overcoming the special interests" and credited Clinton for joining with "thousands of Americans calling on President Obama to reject the Keystone XL pipeline in favor of building an American economy powered by clean energy."
Reince Priebus, the chairman of the Republican National Committee, said Clinton was being "blatantly dishonest" when she said her role at the State Department had prevented her from taking a position. Concern about Vice President Joe Biden political future played a role, too, he said.
"Clearly, Hillary Clinton's rapid decline in the polls and the prospect of the vice president entering the race caused her to change course," Priebus said in a statement.
Clinton announced her decision moments after Pope Francis arrived in Washington at the start of a closely watched visit to the United States. Her opposition came in response to a question from a Drake University student attending a forum on prescription drugs.
"I was in a unique position having been secretary of state, having started this process and not wanting to interfere with the ongoing decision making," Clinton said. "I thought this would be decided by now and therefore I could tell you whether I agree or disagree. But it hasn't been decided and I feel now I've got a responsibility to you and other voters who ask me about this."
Former Maryland Gov. Martin O'Malley, who trails Clinton and Sanders by a wide margin in polls, used the moment to criticize the Democratic front-runner, saying her late-breaking opposition to Keystone is akin to how she arrived at her positions on gay marriage, offering driver's licenses for people not living in the country legally and the Syrian refugee crisis.Clinton's main rivals for the Democratic nomination have campaigned against the project. Sanders, who has surpassed Clinton in some polls in Iowa and New Hampshire, said in a statement he was "glad that Secretary Clinton finally has made a decision and I welcome her opposition to the pipeline. Clearly it would be absurd to encourage the extraction and transportation of some of the dirtiest fossil fuel on the planet."
"On issue after issue," O'Malley said in a statement, "Secretary Clinton has followed — not forged — public opinion. Leadership is about stating where you stand on critical issues, regardless of how they poll or focus group."
Clinton said she would roll out a plan aimed at fighting climate change in a few days and noted proposals released earlier in the campaign that would bolster solar energy and produce more renewable energy.
She said the nation had "a lot of work to do" and that shifting to more renewable energy would create jobs.

Diddy tops Jay Z on new Forbes list of richest rappers

Sean “Diddy” Combs is #1 on Forbes’ list of the world’s highest paid stars in hip hop, pushing off Jay Z and Drake on the 2015 “Hip Hop Cash Kings” tally, which was revealed on Tuesday.

45 year old Diddy  made an estimated $60 million between June 2014 and June 2015, from investments outside of music, such as his TV network Revolt and Ciroc vodka.

Runner up Jay Z, also 45, earned an estimated $56 million from business ventures in music, sports and lifestyle. His 22 shows with his wife, singer Beyonce, helped boost his earnings, Forbes said.

Canadian rapper Drake, 28, came in at No. 3 with $39.5 million, the bulk of which came from touring, as well as high profile endorsements from Sprite and Nike and his Apple collabo.

Dr. Dre has been doing for decades. Recently he’s spent more time making good money—$620 million last year, the highest annual payday of any musician ever, thanks to Apple’s $3 billion Beats buy—which is why it’s something of a surprise that he ranks No. 4 with $33 million, the result of smaller checks from Apple. He also exec-produced biopic Straight Outta Compton and released his long-awaited third album, both of which will boost his total on next year’s list.

#5 Pharrell $32 M. The "Happy" singer is one of the more diversified performers on the list, earning big checks from touring, music, his role as a judge on The Voice and his clothing lines.

Nicki Minaj was the only woman to crack into the top ten of the highest paid hip hop acts, coming in at No. 9 with $21 million from touring and endorsements.

Couple rape teenage boy in a foursome while their children slept nearby

A Missouri couple allegedly held a 16-year-old boy down and raped him as part of a foursome also involving a young woman, police said.
Laura Bentley was charged last week with sodomy, while Jason Schlueter was charged with sodomy and rape, police records show.
The teen told police he was raped by the couple in their Carrollton home in late August or early September, while their four young children were home, according to charging documents.
He said he told them he wasn’t interested in group sex, but Schlueter allegedly held him down while Bentley and the other woman, who is under 21, raped him.

One of the couple’s children, a 6-year-old girl, told police she was spanked after waking up and witnessing the sex. She later identified by name all four of the people involved in the alleged rape.
Bentley told police her young daughter witnessed a different threesome, which did not involve the teen boy, records show. But Schlueter admitted to the foursome, while still contending he never touched the boy and “did not know” if Bentley did.

It’s unclear how the couple knew the teen or the other woman. It's also unclear if the woman will face any charges.

One neighbor said he wasn’t surprised to learn of sick activities happening in the household.
“It is usually wild down there,” the neighbor told KCTV. “Kids would run up and down the stairs yelling and screaming and knocking on doors. It was pretty hectic sometimes.”
It is not yet known if the other woman will face charges relating to the incident.

Fuel subsidy: Reps query N222.1bn extra-budgetary spending

The House of Representatives Ad-Hoc Committee on the Non-Implementation of the 2015 Capital Budget has questioned the executive spending of N222.1bn on fuel subsidies from January 2015 to July, 2015.
During a public hearing in Abuja on Tuesday, Chairman of the committee, Aliyu Pategi (APC Kwara), expressed the committee’s position.
He said:
“Appropriation is an Act, and we insist on its implementation. We want to know where there are challenges but to spend monies such as the N222.1bn without recourse to the parliament is not acceptable to us,” the lawmaker said.
Earlier, the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Finance, Mrs. Anastasia Daniel-Nwaobia, told the committee members that the Federal Government spent N222.1bn on fuel subsidy between January and July, 2015. She said the money wasnt added n the 2015 Appropriation Act nor was it approved by the National Assembly.

Daniel-Nwaobia, who was represented by the Director-General, Budget Office of the Federation, Mr. Aliyu Gusau, said he did not have sufficient information on the expenditures.

Sean Penn sues Lee Daniels for $10M after abuse comments

Sean Penn is suing 'Empire' director Lee Daniels, for accusing him of being violent to women hitting him with a $10 million defamation suit.
In papers filed in Manhattan Supreme Court, Sean Penn says Daniels defamed him when he compared him to scandal-scarred “Empire” star Terrence Howard in a recent interview.
Lee Daniels
“That poor boy, (Terrence) ain’t done nothing different than Marlon Brando or Sean Penn, and all of a sudden he’s some f---in’ demon. That’s a sign of the time, of race, of where we are right now in America,” Daniels told the Hollywood Reporter.
The suit says the statements about Penn, “one of this generation’s most highly acclaimed and greatest artists and humanitarians”, are “reckless false and defamatory.”
“Specifically, in purporting to ‘defend’ the ongoing legal and related troubles of  the star of Daniels’ television show ‘Empire',  who has reportedly, and publicly, admitted to physically abusing at least one woman and reportedly been arrested five times for violent acts against women. Daniels has falsely asserted and/or implied that Penn is guilty of ongoing, continuing violence against women,” the suit says.
That’s not the case, the suit says.
While “he has certainly had several brushes with the law, Penn (unlike Howard) has never been arrested, much less convicted, for domestic violence, as his ex-wives (including Madonna) would confirm and attest,” the suit says.
“Nor has Penn admitted to “slap(ping) a woman or abusing others (as Howard has also reportedly admitted, reportedly asserted that he was acting in self-defense.)”
The suit cites a police report that quotes Howard as saying:
“I broke down the door and hit my wife,” and an interview with Rolling Stone, where Howard is quoted as saying, “She was talking to me real strong, and I lost my mind and slapped her in front of the kids.”

Trans woman upset over airport security scanners flagging body 'anomaly'

A transgender woman told thousands of social media followers about her embarrassing experience going through security at Orlando International Airport, a problem occasionally faced by traveling trans men and women.

Shadi Petosky was flagged as she went through security at the airport as she rushed to her flight to Minneapolis Monday night due to an “anomaly” that appeared in her full-body scan calibrated for a woman. The canner went off and she was asked to step aside.
“That’s my penis,” she bluntly told a male Security agent, explaining that she was transgender.

The awkward conversation brought Petosky to tears as additional agents questioned her gender and pulled her aside for a 40-minute pat-down, inspection and explosive material scare that resulted in a missed flight to Minneapolis.

Dozens of tweets and a handful of tearful selfies documented the television producer’s ordeal, attracting the attention of transgender activists, American Airlines representatives and TSA officials.
“I’m embarrassed about it,” Petosky told the Daily News from a hotel in Miami.

American Airlines said they booked Shadi into another flight to Mineappolis for free after they heard of her ordeal but she said that was a lie.

She asked for any airline but AA to book her into another flight but she stayed in Miami until she booked another flight to Minneapolis on a later flight.

Photo: Boko Haram suspect arrested in Lagos

A suspected member of the Boko Haram sect identified as Abdullahi Adamu has been arrested by Security operatives attached to Operation Mesa (OP Mesa) in Ijora area of Lagos State following a tip-off by residents of the community.
The suspect, identified as Abdullahi Adamu, was apprehended during a raid carried out by operatives of the security outfit comprising the Army and the State Security Service (SSS).
According to The Nation, the raid, which took place at the Ijora 7-Up area of Lagos, came after a tip-off on the activities of a terror network allegedly co-ordinated by Iranians.

The suspects was arrested after soldiers ransacked one of the buildings in the area. Adamu was said to have concealed some devices suspected to be explosives in boxes, which were stacked in the ceiling of the house.  Also recovered alongside the suspected explosives were two AK47 rifles.

Commenting on the arrest, the paramount ruler of Ijora community, Oba Fatai Ojora said
"We have been calling on the state government to do something about this. This is the second time we will arrest Boko Haram suspects in this community and nothing has been done on that. The one we caught now had even admitted that he is a terrorist. You know that majority of the northerners in Lagos live in Ijora, Agege and Badia.’’he said
Another member of the community who spoke on condition of anonymity said “People came to me that they saw one man on the internet and that he is a member of Boko Haram, saying they know where he lives. They said they are going to his house and identify him. They arrested him and handed him to Oba of Ojora,” he said.
