Is Senator Ekweremadu Really Representing The Igbos?

                         
The highest appointment of an opposition party candidate in the Senate was the Minority Leader as enshrined in National Assembly rules during the Peoples Democratic Party’s 16-year reign. The Deputy Senate President Ike Ekweremadu, should have contested for the Senate presidency to convince Nigerians he is representing Ndigbo’s interest in the National Assembly instead of settling for deputy.

The Deputy Senate President is his share for supporting Bukola Saraki’s Senate presidency ambition.

He should endeavour to defect to the All Progressives Congress if he sincerely wants to represent Ndigbo’s interest and not the PDP’s latent agenda which is aimed at rubbishing APC’s programmes before the 2019 general election.

The PDP during their 16-year rule never accommodated opposition party candidates for National Assembly top offices that are meant for the ruling party. Why should the APC accept that from the PDP? Ekweremadu’s aim is to destabilise the APC and not to represent Ndigbo. He wants to rubbish President Muhammadu Buhari and his programmes in the eyes of the electorate. Buhari should be wary of the PDP’s plans.

No Part Of Nigeria Will Ever Be Taken By Boko Haram Again

                              
The Defence Headquarters has given an assurance that no Nigerian territory will "ever again" be relinquished to the Boko Haram insurgents or any other rebel group.

“I believe that Boko Haram is no longer strong enough to hold any territory in this country because of the level of losses they have suffered as a result of our offensive.

“I make this comment, not only about Gamboru Ngala, but it applies to any other territory in this country and very soon this issue will be clear for all to see.

“But I can assure you that we are doing a lot and never again will Boko Haram or any group at all be allowed to recapture territories taken by our troops. What happened was in the past, I can tell you that it will never happen again."

The acting Director of Defence Information, Col. Rabe Abubakar, gave the assurance in Abuja on Wednesday while fielding questions from defence correspondents.

He said the Nigerian Armed Forces had severely decimated the command structure of Boko Haram, stressing that the group no longer had the capacity to hold any territory in Nigeria.

Abubakar said recent exploits and gains of the counter-insurgency operations would soon be open for all to see, adding that the Nigerian military had been reinforced to stand any form of aggression.

Nigerian Senator Arrested in Saudi Arabia after False Claims

               
Senator Hassan Barata has been arrested by Saudi Arabian authorities and he is currently in detention.

According to sources on the ground, when he was arrested and quizzed, he claimed to be an employee of the Nigerian Embassy but his claim was later found to be false.

The senator, who is believed to have
travelled to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia few weeks ago, may have overstayed when he was picked up.

Senator Barata, a former Chairman Senate Committee on Culture and Tourism, represented Adamawa South in the 6th Senate, having been elected in 2011 on the ticket of the PDP.

He was believed to be holding an official passport on the trip.

Recall that the Federal Government has directed the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) to retrieve diplomatic and official passports from all persons who are not entitled to hold such documents.

Details of The Female UNILAG Student Who Was Electrocuted

                            
Beautiful Oluchi Anekwe was a 300 level student of the Department of Accounting at the University of Lagos (UNILAG) and was a First Class scholar in her department until her death from a high voltage cable that snapped off the pole on the campus last night. I hear she was also a model.

Miss Oluchi was returning from church service and was walking along the "New Hall" bus stop in front of Sodeinde Hall of residence when a high voltage cable snapped off the pole and killed her.

Oluchi is from Aku town in Igbo Etiti Local Government Area of Enugu State. May her soul RIP - Amen!

Three Women Found Dead With INEC Officer In A Room

                       
Details have emerged on the discovery of four female dead bodies in a room in Ifite area of Awka in Anambra State. The state police command discovered the dead bodies in a room occupied by a couple on Olisa Onyeka Crescent near the Commissioners’ quarters in Awka GRA.

Two of the dead bodies were said to be holding Holy Bible at the time they were discovered and they might have gone to pray with the tenant of the room when they met their death.

One of the victims and a tenant in the building, Mrs. Chinwe Obi, a Grade Level 14 officer with the INEC is said to hail from Nnewi. Until her death, she was the electoral officer for Onitsha South LGA.

It was also gathered, yesterday, that the husband of Mrs. Obi, who returned to Nigeria from Cotonou, Benin Republic, died about a week ago in the same room and the body is still in the mortuary.

The state Commissioner of Police, Mr. Hosea Karma said that following volunteered information, he went with his men to the scene and discovered the bodies after neighbours tried Mrs. Obi’s telephone line severally without any response.

The CP said: “A report came to us that a woman was being called on phone without anybody picking it for two days and we had to mobilize to her residence. On getting there, we had to force the window open and saw the bodies lying on the floor. “The bodies found in that room were without bruises which was an indication that there was no attack from anyone.”

Karma said that the other three women, whose identities had not been known, were being suspected to be her church members who came to sympathize with her over the death of her husband.

Mehn, this is very troubling. Women went to sympathize with someone over her husband's death and all of them ended up dead by morning. Whatever is behind this saga, God knows.

Tinubu meets Buhari in Aso Rock over Some Ministerial Names

             
The National Leader of the All Progressives Congress, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu and the first national chairman of the party, Chief Bisi Akande, held a secret meeting with President Muhammadu Buhari inside the commander-in-chief office at the Presidential Villa on Wednesday.

The visit came less than 24 hours after former President Olusegun Obasanjo met with Buhari. Sources in the seat of power told OluFamous.Com that Tinubu met Buhari and approve some names.

Addressing correspondents after the hour long meeting, Tinubu said he came for serious business.

A reliable source also told Punch that the ministerial list was one of the topics discussed at the meeting. He said just as Tinubu was given the power to pick Buhari’s running mate during the electioneering, Buhari was giving him the privilege of filling some positions that should go to the South-West.

He said, “Buhari never marginalised the South-West as is being speculated. Most of the northern appointments that Buhari made are those that will work closely with him in the villa and Tinubu was not really interested in them.

“It was Tinubu that recommended Babatunde Fowler to head the Federal Inland Revenue Service and that is the next best thing after oil which many people don’t understand.

“Buhari has insisted that people that are answering to cases of corruption will not be part of his government and Tinubu is aware of this. He has recommended a former commissioner in Lagos for appointment too and he will be part of Buhari’s economic team even if he is not appointed as a minister.”

Revealed: Nigeria Army Says No Election Took Place In Rivers

                     
For the second time in about two days, the Nigerian Army has insisted that the 2015 governorship election did not hold in Rivers State, contrary to the claims of INEC chairman in the state.

The chief of army staff who sent three army officers to testify at the Rivers State Governorship Election Petition Tribunal sitting in Abuja maintained that election did not hold in virtually all polling centres assigned to them to provide security.

The army officers, who led different deployments on the orders of the Nigerian Army, said thugs carted away the election materials after the would-be voters had been scared away with gunshots.

The officers who covered different LGAs for the army are Captain Abubakar Mohammed from Bonny Camp, Lagos, Captain Fred Bala from Maiduguri and Captain Isa Al-Makura.

Al-Makura, who covered Ikwerri local government along with 30 other soldiers, claimed that the entire council was tense right from April 10 when his team arrived the area to provide security for voters.

He told Justice Suleman Ambrosa that sporadic gunshots were fired in major towns of the council, hence the voters got scared and stayed away from voting.

He said that at a time, his team got confused over the bombardment of phone calls from the ad hoc staff of INEC who were shouting for help and rescue from the thugs that invaded their polling units.

He added that on arrival at the polling units in Osuala, Onuerelu, Omerelu and Alu, the INEC ad hoc staff, mainly corps members, were found mercilessly beaten by the thugs.

Governors Reject Death Penalty for Looters; They Are Involved

                    
Many governors, who spoke with Punch on the matter on Thursday, out rightly rejected the suggestion that all big man who loot Nigeria's resources should be sentenced to death.

The governor said, “Everybody knows President Muhammadu Buhari is transparent and means well for the nation and would never want to hear anything about corruption.

“Even under 100 days in office, electricity is improving. People know that if you try it you are gone. I always say this, whether you are a governor, permanent secretary or labour leader, you cannot be corrupt under a leader that is not corrupt, because you will be punished.

“Unfortunately as a governor
I cannot be saying that capital punishment should be meted out to corrupt public officials. Because I cannot say that, that is why I will say that anybody that is found wanting, whether you are governor or any other public officer should be jailed for life,” Governor Ibikunle Amosun said this to Labour.

The organised labour at the beginning of the week had said looters should be given the death sentence in order to serve as deterrence to others.

But most governors, who reacted to the labour suggestion said the death sentence would be too harsh.

Also both governors of Ekiti and Rivers states, Ayodele Fayose and Nyesom Wike respectively, out rightly rejected death penalty for looters.

Fayose claimed that “In countries where death penalty was introduced, it has not stopped looting. In advanced countries like US, jail sentence is the penalty. What we need is proper moral education to change orientation of the people. Jail sentence is better; it can reform.”

On his part, Wike said that Nigeria had enough laws to deter people from fleecing the nation.

He said, “Nigerians have a role to play by deriding looters and not to praise them for their fiscal irresponsibility. There should be a strong punitive measure to discourage looting because of its domino effects. When a treasury is looted, there won’t be money for the provision of necessities such as hospitals, roads, etc.

“Maybe because it happened in Ghana and the economy improved, the labour organisations want it in Nigeria. But that was a military regime and Jerry Rawlings was a military man. However, the extant laws on looting need serious and urgent review, even if the death penalty is discouraged.”
