Rivers state students in the UK cry out, say they've been abandoned, facing deportation

Students who were sponsored to a UK university by the Rivers State Sustainable Development Agency (RSSDA) under the River State government have reached out to LIB, saying they have been abandoned by their state government. They say their school fees have not been paid for two years and their visas have been curtailed. Below is what a student wrote in;
We are 2nd year students with the university of Huddersfield currently hoping to progress to final year by September or going on placement as some of us have chosen. It is with deep shock that we realized that the RSSDA (Rivers state sustainable development Agency) under the rivers state government who is our sponsor have not paid our fees for 2 years.
The university have made all efforts to get the money from them but they have since attributed the non-payment to the government of rivers state not releasing funds. The university even went to the extent of travelling to Nigeria for the money. We are more than 11 students with the cost of each student fees being 12,500 pounds each. Since all effort have failed to get the money from the agency, the university have come to the resolve of suspending our studies and revoking their sponsorship on our visas, Hence, giving us 60 days to leave the country. The have 10 days to revoke the visa cancellation if the agency gives them a time frame for payment and the 10 days expires this Friday. The agency have deliberately refused replying the university on several emails and refused to also commit to them by giving them time frame for payment. Worst of it all is that the agency have not even acknowledge the situation or even comfort us and take responsibility for whatever damage this might incur. They said and I quote “they don’t even have our flight money back”.
We are stranded!!! We have not been paid allowance and rent money for 9 months now which is meant to be 800 pounds a month. Fees owed by the government around England and other part of the world have amounted to about 3 billion naira. We need this video to spread let the whole world see how politics is affecting the future of the country. PLEASE!!

Bangladesh blogger hacked to death for atheist views. The 4th to be killed in the country this year

Popular blogger Niloy Chakrabarti, who used the pen-name Niloy Neel, 40, was killed yesterday Friday August 7th after a gang armed with machetes broke into his home in Dhaka, Bangladesh. He was well known for his atheist views and anti-Islamic writings.
"They entered his room in the fifth floor and shoved his friend aside and then hacked him to death. He was a listed target of the Islamist militants," Imran H. Sarker, head of Bangladesh Blogger and Activist Network told AFP
Police confirmed Chakrabarti had been murdered by a group of half a dozen people in the capital's Goran neighbourhood, although they had no details on his background or the motive for the killing.

"There were six people who knocked his door, saying that they were looking to rent a flat," Muntashirul Islam, a deputy police commissioner, told AFP. "Two of them then took him to a room and then slaughtered him there," Islam added."His wife was in the flat but she was confined to another room."

Asif Mohiuddin, another secular blogger who himself survived an attack by militants in Bangladesh in 2013, described Chakrabarti as an atheist "free thinker" whose posts appeared on several sites.
"He was critical against religions and wrote against Islamist, Hindu and Buddhist fundamentalism. He was a founding member of a rationalist organisation," Mohiuddin, who is now based in Berlin, told AFP by phone.

Niloy is the fourth secular blogger to be killed in the Muslim-majority nation since February, when Bangladeshi-born US citizen Avijit Roy was hacked to death in Dhaka. His wife was also badly injured in the attack. The other victims include Ananta Bijoy, Das who was attacked by a group wielding machetes on May 13 as he headed to work in Sylhet, and 27-year-old Washiqur Rahman who was hacked to death in Dhaka in March. Most secular bloggers have either gone into hiding, often using pseudonyms in their posts, or have fled abroad.

Activist groups say they fear that Islamist hit squads have hit lists which contain the full names and addresses of the bloggers. Bangladeshi authorities banned the hardline Islamist group Ansarullah Bangla Team (ABT) following Das's murder in May, after facing accusations that they were doing too little to stop such attacks.

In a recent petition addressed to Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, authors including Salman Rushdie and Margaret Atwood called on her government "to do all in their power to ensure that the tragic events of the last three months are not repeated, and to bring the perpetrators to justice". "We are gravely concerned by this escalating pattern of violence against writers and journalists who are peacefully expressing their views," said the petition.

Bangladesh is an officially secular country, but more than 90 percent of its 160 million people are Muslim.

Strong Petitions Flood EFCC Against Powerful Ex-Governors

A huge number of damning petitions are currently being investigated by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), especially against some powerful former governors.

According to senior operatives of the commission, some immediate past governors and many of their family members will soon be charged to court on the conclusion of investigation into allegations of stealing, abuse of office, money laundering and other vices, for which EFCC said they have been indicted.

“they will all have their days in courts of competent jurisdiction.”
A highly placed source told  LEADERSHIP.

Checks revealed that most governors that served out their tenure on May 29, “have cases to answer”.

Isa Yuguda is said to be an exception because there is currently no petitions written against him.

“We don’t know if there is any understanding between Yuguda and his successor but all the others have cases against them”, a top operative of the anti-corruption agency squealed.

“It has been a floodgate of damning allegations for most of the immediate past governors. We are investigating every matter in details and sieving out frivolous ones. The truth is that many of them stand indicted and will have to be prosecuted for money laundering, stealing and other corruptions charges.

“It is unbelievable that very few can escape if the judiciary doesn’t look at technicalities. You know we don’t adjudicate”, the source added.

EFCC had last week invited Mrs. Toyin Saraki, Senate President Bukola Saraki’s wife and Zainab Dakingari, wife of the immediate past Kebbi state governor and daughter of the late President Umaru Yar’Adua’s for questioning for alleged money laundering.

Saraki’s wife was invited to explain issues relating to the management of the accounts of some companies where she has some stake.

“There is a suspicion of money laundering. We want her to come and explain how these accounts are being run,” the source confided.

Hajiya Dakingari responded to some issues on state funds allegedly traced to companies owned by her.

“We cannot say whether these companies executed some contracts for the state or not”, the source said.

While the former governors of Imo, Adamawa and Jigawa states have been arraigned in court on multiples charges of corruption and money laundering, a former governor of Borno state, Ali Modu Sherif. was quizzed by the Commission and released on administrative bail.

Penultimate Thursday (July 30), EFCC reportedly questioned Chief Mrs. Ifeoma Nwobodo, the Chief of Staff of the immediate past Enugu State Governor, Sullivan Chime, over alleged embezzlement.

According to EFCC officials who didn’t want their names published, Nwobodo’s probe is a preparatory move to go against Chime.

The woman was grilled for hours following series of petitions centred on conspiracy and diversion of Enugu State funds by the former governor and his minders.

A top official of the EFCC said, “Nwobodo’s invitation is believed to be a precursor to the interrogation of her former principal as the agency is said to be flooded with petitions indicting Chime of humongous graft during his eight-year rule of Enugu State as governor from 2007 to 2015.”

In the coming weeks, crack detectives will put together findings and interrogate more former state governors, LEADERSHIP was told on Thursday. These former governors include those of Plateau, Ebonyi, Kano, Kebbi, Ekiti, Akwa Ibom and Cross River states.

Many of those interrogated so far have prima facie cases that have been established against them.

“They have to defend themselves”, the source assured.
